Visas

Most will require a tourist card but not a visa.

The tourist card costs 20 US$ but is added to the cost of your ticket whether you need one or not. Airlines mostly keep (cheat) the extra money if you don't need the card (have a resident visa etc.) - nice little earner for them.

The tourist card (FMT) system applies to UK, most EU, US, Japanese, Australian and New Zealand citizens.

Airport Transfer

Taxis are the easiest and reasonably priced. To the city is around 15 $ (10 euro)

... a taxi to the Zocalo/Centro Historico areas where you can see some sights and have a meal if you want; the cost of traveling this way in an authorized taxi will be in the peso equivalent range of just less than US$15 (each way, to/from).

... and ...

If you take the metro either way, remember that the walk from the international terminal to the metro entrance is probably a kilometer, and you'll have to change trains twice. I wouldn't bother with the metro if it's rush hour.
[from Lonely Planet's thorn tree ]

We budgeted 10 euro each way for your transfer plus 20 euro for the departure tax.

Currency

Local currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). There are about 15.5 to the euro or 22.1 to the pound or 10.9 to the US dollar.

The Mexican Peso has stayed fairly close to the dollar in the last 5 years including the last year as the dollar drops wildly. If that trend continues, as seems likely, the mexican peso will become even cheaper for europeans.

Getting to Mexico City [aka Mexico D.F.] from Europe is a rather long flight even nonstop. Also it is not cheap.

Whilst flights at almost half the price are available to the Caribbean, vaious carribean stopovers are probably a better choice if you just want a short stopover to improve a long haul journey. However Mexico itself has so much to offer, it makes sense to include Mexico City here as an option for those who have time to stop and explore.

On the positive side, you *are* more than half way to many South American destination and onward flights are more numerous (and often nonstop) than from less populous stopovers in the Caribbean.

For those who just can't get enough, take a Caribbean stopover on your way to Mexico and a Mexican stopover on your way to South America. Could life be sweeter?
